A GROUP SHOW
CURATED BY KITTY CLARK
19 December 2017 – 21 January 2018
Opening Night: Tuesday 19th December at 6pm
At Saint Cloche we like to round up the exhibiting year with a Grande Finale, and our focus on the JET SET in 2017 raises the bar by sky high.
The show is inspired by the sophisticated, stylish and often scandalous lives of the JET SET: the first wave of privileged souls to take advantage of the new age of jet airliners that transformed the lives of the rich and famous in the nineteen-fifties and sixties and truly turned the world into their oyster.
Long before economy flights made air-travel mundane, flying was a luxurious pastime. For an elite few, who had the funds, time and inclination to travel the globe, holidaying in exotic places, attending fashionable parties, lounging poolside in luxury locations and indulging themselves in the new glamour and freedom of a rapidly changing world, the life of the jet-setters encapsulated a new international style.
In amalgamating notions of a futuristic space age with the essence of modern art and architecture, fashion, film, objects and style, the dramatic aesthetic of the JET SET marks a new age taking off.
Curated by Kitty Clark, this eclectic show brings together a selection of painters, sculptors and ceramic artists who take a contemporary approach to these themes and recalibrate them in their own diverse ways.
Whichever aspect of the era takes centre-stage in their works, you’ll find references to international high-spots and glamorous, globe-trotting lives. There’s the influence of fashion with its strong graphic qualities and luscious colours; the bold simplicity of modernism; the retro-futurism of an imagined space age; and the swooping transcendence of the curve – all infused with the freedom, pizzazz, promise and excitement of the jet age.
Do come along for the ride.
